“Earned It” from Fifty Shades Of Grey
Nominees: Abel Tesfaye, Stephan Moccio, Jason “DaHeala” Quenneville, Ahmad Balshe
One of several songs created originally for the Fifty Shades Of Grey blockbuster, it’s interesting to see the Golden Globes and the Oscars go two separate ways on this one. While the Globes favored the poppier “Love Me Like You Do”, this time around it’s all about The Weeknd. The R&B crooner had a pretty spectacular year in 2015, and now just two weeks into 2016, things are going pretty well yet again. “Earned It” is the biggest hit on this list, by the way.

“Til It Happens To You” from The Hunting Ground
Nominees: Lady Gaga and Diane Warren
Many critics were expecting this to appear on the final list, and here it is. Warren is a legend in writing songs for films, and this is her eighth nomination in total, but it’s a first time here for Gaga. The song is a serious one, concerning itself with rape, and it’s done exceptionally well by two experts.
“Manta Ray” from Racing Extinction
Nominees: J. Ralph and Antony Hegarty
There is always at least one nominee that seems to come from nowhere, and this year it is “Manta Ray”. Taken from a documentary about how species are dying off at an alarming rate, “Manta Ray” is the dark horse here already. J. Ralph was nominated a few years ago for the song “Before My Time” from another documentary, Chasing Ice, but he lost out to Adele. This is a first time nomination for Antony Hegarty, which some might know better as the frontman for the group Antony and the Johnsons.
“Simple Song #3” from Youth
Nominees: David Lang
Another carryover from the Golden Globes, “Simple Song #3” is easily one of the best songs from a movie of the year, as critics have been raving about it since it was released. Not many know about it, but it was powerful enough to get on the bill. This is Lang’s first nomination.
“Writing’s On The Wall” from Spectre
Nominees: Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes
Because Adele got this honor a few years ago—mixed with the fact that some weren’t thrilled with the final song—there was quite a bit of uncertainty as to whether or not “Writing’s On The Wall” would get a nomination. Smith and his longtime collaborator Jimmy Napes have now joined a long line of Bond theme song writers that were nominated for an Oscar, and with a Golden Globe already to their names for the track, is an Oscar next?
